AirTurn QUADThe AirTurn QUAD is a great device for musicians who are looking to eliminate background noise during their public performances and recording sessions.

It enables users to toggle between backing tracks, trigger pulsing metronomes, control special effects, navigate setlists, transpose keys, and much more.

The device weighs just under 2 1/2 pounds. It measures 16 1/2 inches long, 6 1/4 inches wide, and 2 1/4 inches high. Important to notice that this device is twice as large as Airturn Duo.

AirTurn QUAD Review, Pros and Cons.

AirTurn has a wonderful customer service team that provides real-time tech support to its customers. While we found this product extremely easy to use, it was nice to know that help was always around the corner.

It will be easy for you to find a perfect application to pair with because AirTurn Quad Bluetooth Pedal Page Turner is compatible with dozens of programs.

The purpose of this turner is to manage your iPad movement using a Bluetooth link to control app software.

There are also two pairing methods. You can store the connections of up to 8 different devices for instant connections using open pairing. Another type of pairing — closed — it stores  the connection for only one device. You see that it doesn’t connect with error to other devices.

If you need to size down the quad-pedal turner into double-pedal turner, you should use the preset modes. Otherwise, you should use some applications which can configure the pedals within the application itself. You may use whatever setup you want: the second pedal to scroll up or the fourth pedal to page down, for instance. So, choose the pedals you would like to use and assign them a function.

It may be very useful for you to have a feature of configuration up to 8 devices at the same time for max customization.

On top of that, we loved knowing this product was made in the United States. It’s a hallmark of technological ingenuity and a game changer for any musician. While this pedal is a bit pricier than our other selections, it’s worth every penny.

iRig BlueTurn page turner – Overview:

Comparisons

PageFlip vs AirTurn

PageFlip and AirTurn are both reputable brands offering quality Bluetooth page turners. However, they vary in features, design, and performance.

PageFlip pedals, like the Firefly, are known for their quiet operation, tactile response, and backlit pedals – a feature that comes handy in low-light situations. It offers five modes of operation ensuring compatibility with many applications, including forScore. The Firefly has a robust battery life and operates on two AA batteries, with an optional USB power input.

AirTurn’s BT200S series, on the other hand, are compact and versatile, offering six modes of operation. They’re known for their durability and solid construction. The BT200S-2, for example, features two ATFS-2 pedals mounted on a non-slip pedal board. It’s rechargeable via USB, providing up to 200 hours of use with a single charge. However, they lack the backlit feature of PageFlip’s pedals.

Both offer easy integration with forScore. If backlit pedals and optional AA battery operation are important, you might prefer PageFlip. If you value a smaller footprint and rechargeability, AirTurn could be a better choice. It comes down to individual preference and specific needs.

AirTurn DUO 200 vs DUO 500

The AirTurn DUO 200 and the AirTurn DUO BT-106 (now marketed as the AirTurn DUO 500) are both reliable Bluetooth pedals designed to turn pages, cue backing tracks, and more. Both offer seamless integration with popular apps like forScore, but they come with a few differences.

The DUO 200 features the new BT200S-2 pedal, which has a compact and lightweight design. It’s rechargeable via USB, providing up to 200 hours of use on a single charge. The pedal can be detached from the pedalboard, offering flexibility depending on the use case. The DUO 200 offers six modes, including momentary, latch, and pulse, which can be configured via the AirTurn Manager app.

The DUO BT-106 (500) features the older BT-106 pedal design, which is a bit bulkier but still robust. Like the DUO 200, it’s also rechargeable via USB and offers similar usage hours. The BT-106 pedal can be used with up to six external foot switches or buttons for additional control. It features an anti-slip grip and a red/green status indicator.

In summary, the choice between the DUO 200 and DUO 500 boils down to personal preference and specific needs. The DUO 200 offers a compact design with a detachable pedal, while the DUO 500 provides options for additional control with external switches or buttons.

Buying Guide: What to Look for In a Bluetooth Page Turner?

A wireless page turner can be a musician’s best friend, but it helps to know exactly what you’re looking for before you dive headfirst into the market. Bluetooth page turners typically consist of a panel of foot pedals with a few toggles or buttons.

They tend to be lightweight, compact, and plain. While it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish one page turner from another, it’s important to look at all the individual elements.

Pedals

Page turners typically consist of two pedals, though we’ve discovered a few with more. The pedals are usually set on a small metal or plastic platform that is intended to sit on the floor.

Pedals typically boast some sort of skid-free surface, such as texturized rubber grips. These enables a better connection between a musician’s foot and the pedal.

Best Bluetooth Page Turners

Pedals need to be durable enough to withstand plenty of foot contact. As most musicians will tell you, onstage equipment takes a pretty hard beating, especially devices that literally sit on top of the floor.

Keep in mind that most pedals are smaller than a standard foot. Compact pedals are preferred. However, they should be set far apart in order to prevent accidental peripheral contact.

Compatibility

It’s important to select a page turner that is compatible with your smart device. The vast majority of page turners we came across were compatible with Apple and Android systems.

Not to mention, they worked with a comprehensive collection of apps. Consider contacting a manufacturer for a list of apps that are compatible with their page turners.

One of the most common consumer complaints we noticed was about a turners failure to sync as expected.

Bluetooth

Most new page turners will not pair with older devices. This is because new devices require Bluetooth 4.0. Bluetooth 4.0, or Bluetooth LE, are low energy. As such, they are an ideal platform for small page turners.

It’s also important to note the range of distance at which a page turner can be synced. We found that most page turners could sync between 30 and 100 feet.

When you consider that a standard stage is about 20 feet wide and 16 feet deep, page turners with minimal Bluetooth ranges are still capable of providing reliable connections.

Best Bluetooth Page Turners

Beyond that, determine whether your prospective page turner can be synced to more than one Bluetooth-compatible device without issue. What’s more, determine a device’s ease of connectivity.

In most cases, users just need to enable Bluetooth on their smart device and utilize one-click syncing.

Modes

Most page turners offer a handful of different pedal modes. In most cases, users can set their pedal modes through an app of their liking. Popular pedal modes include page up/page down, page left/page right, and distinct trigger selections.

Responsiveness

Most manufacturers aspire to create a natural and responsive foot pedal feel. What’s more, many have developed silent pedal actions. Pedals should respond instantly to subtle foot taps.

Keep in mind that some page turners enable musicians to rest their foot on a depressed pedal without enabling a page turn. This stop-action response tends to confuse some musicians.

Look

Many musicians have spent endless hours curating their pedal boards and stage presence. With that said, it’s often imperative that a page turner be compact and easy to locate alongside a mess of other devices.

Best Bluetooth Page Turners

For some, a distinct colorway or LED lights make it easier to locate a pedal in dim lighting. For others, an all-black pedal board is ideal. Consider your personal preferences before settling on a page turner.

Power

There is a wide range of power sources for Bluetooth page turners. The vast majority of page turners we came across utilized alkaline batteries. Meanwhile, some page turners had rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and others boasted DC power-in ports.

Regardless of the power source, we found that most page turners utilized very small amounts of energy. As such, they could last for thousands of hours without needing a battery change or charge.

With that said, we are somewhat wary of page turners that have secured battery latches. This added an unnecessary about of time and hassle to battery changes.

F.A.Q.

What else is a page turner capable of?

While page turners are typically used by musicians, many can also be used to flip between digital book pages and slides. Professors, public speakers, and bibliophiles can all benefit from the hands-free control that page turners provide.

Many page turners also enable the use of specialty tools and features. We’ve come across models that can do everything from start a metronome to trigger a backing track.

The truth of the matter is that Bluetooth page turners are a relatively novel concept. As such, new and improved features are being added every day.

If PageFlip pedal is connected, can I type something on the iPad without disconnecting this tool? Won’t iPad forbid me from using a pop up keyboard?

To hide the virtual keyboard you should simply press the current mode button. This button is next to the blinking light. You need to do that only once at the beginning  of a session before you power off the pedal.

So just press it once and the virtual keyboard will work as you need. It will appear when you tap into a text field.

If I’d like to control all of the iPads in the group using any of page turners, is it possible?

To control all the devices in one group you will need an app like OnSong. This program transposes any OnSong-format file to any key. This function works using the editing features.  This will allow you control all the participants you need, so everyone is on the same page during the event.

Are page turners actually noiseless?

Many manufacturers claim that their Bluetooth page turners are entirely noiseless, and we believe them. As you can see in the video above, there is virtually no audio output from the pedal when it is depressed.

The elimination of springs and other noisy mechanisms helps reduce the amount of sound produced when a pedal is engaged.

How can I load the music into it? And how to find the beginning of the song you want to play or read?

Certainly, you need the app to do this. It may be Unreal Book. You need to download the lyrics as a PDF-file. Add the son to your iPad using iTunes and application. Open the application and retrieve the song.

Can a page turner be paired with more than smart device?

Some page turners can be paired with more than one device. Typically, you’ll need to find an app that enables shared pairing. This can help a band to stay in sync with one another.

With that said, many musicians look for page turns that have controlled pairings. This helps to prevent interference between two musicians who rely on different sheet music.

Final Thoughts

At this point, you’re probably fantasizing about hands-free page turning. After all, there are enough on-stage dynamics to worry about without adding papercuts and windblown sheet music into the mix.

Now that you’ve finally found some Bluetooth page turners you can count on, you can finally check out those Bluetooth metronomes that have been sitting in your online shopping cart. Rock on!

Best Bluetooth Page Turners

  1. I have currently downloaded my music into Book on the iPad. Is there a page turner that can be applied to this Apple App as I would prefer not to have to enter my scores again

  2. I’m a singer and I play guitar and this is one of the best Bluetooth Page Turners I have across. I have tried a few others and they all had some serious issues like no plug and play, low battery life, and so on. The Donner Bluetooth Page Turner was the worst. While the page tuner’s pedal looks great, I accidentally switched modes with my foot in the middle of a performance and the chord chart app went berserk. I had to stop playing to manually reset the pedal. Honestly, after that mishap, I never used the pedal again.

This is not a problem I have experienced with the Stomp page turner. It’s durable and the switches are real. The mode buttons are deep-set, so it nearly impossible to accidentally switch from one mode to another. It looks great and works extremely well. My only beef is that to remove the battery, you need to use a screwdriver. But the battery life is great and there is a battery indicator to show how much power you are left with. All in all, it is an excellent page turner in my opinion.

  3. I had previously owned the Airturn BT-106 before I bought the PageFlip page turner, and the reason I bought in the first place is because it is rechargeable. But it was a huge mistake. The Airturn has a clunky design. It does power down automatically and if you forget to turn it off, the battery power is going to go kaput.

The PageFlip page turner is great because it has amazing features, one of which is the power management software. The software automatically powers the unit off if it is idle for 30 minutes. It retains enough power to automatically wake up the pedal, the processor, and drivers quickly. It utilizes OTS batteries that can last a whole year before you need to replace them.

  4. I bought the Donner after the Bluetooth page tuner I had stopped working. Although, it did give me several years of service. The reason why I choose the Donner was that it has numerous positive ratings and reviews and the price was right within my budget. And I can say, so far so good. It works well, and what I like the most about it is that the switch limits the page turns. The page turns only when you press the pedal. The previous page turner I owned did not work in the same way. I also love the 50-hour battery life and it automatically powers down when idle for 25 minutes. To wake it up, you simply touch the pedal.

The other thing I love about the Donner is if you connect it to your iPad when you click both the right and left pedals simultaneously, it activates the iPad’s virtual keyboard. With my previous page tuner, when I needed to do some typing, I had to do it manually, which entailed turning off the pedal and then it turning it back on to continue using it. This is not a problem you get with the Donner. It is the ideal page turner for musicians who love to use sheet music.

  5. I got the Airturn Quad. It works great. It helps me change songs easily. It’s hands-free, so no more hand swiping. The battery has a long life and you can connect the page turner to any smart device. Personally, I use it with my iPad Air. The only issue I have with the device is the connection. Sometimes it loses the connection or the pedal ceases to function even when the device is connected. When this happens, I usually reset my iPad Bluetooth settings to get the connection back or to get the pedal to be responsive.

  6. Nowadays, I see a lot of musicians using wireless pedals and iPad apps to turn pages. What are apps and pedals do they use?

    • I use the ForScore app and my Bluetooth page turner is from Donner. I like the page turner, it works well. But there are many other page turners available. If you are looking to buy one, get one that has two pedals, so that in case you need to go back to a page, you will be able to do that easily. Also, go for a pedal that does not make noise when you press on it.

  7. What Bluetooth Page Turners would you recommend that can turn pages and sync to my smart device?

    • I have a Stomp Bluetooth page turner. It works great but the pedal is slightly loud, which is not ideal for performances. Consider checking out the Pageflip Butterfly page turner or Airturn PED, I have heard good things about these pedals.

  8. If you are looking for a cheap foot pedal, you may want to rethink that. While you may save a chunk of money, you might experience a lot of problems with a cheap page turner. So instead, focus on the quality of the pedal rather than the price tag.

A good Bluetooth page turner should meet the following standards:

Rock solid mechanism and Bluetooth connection
No double page turns from a single foot press
    It should not be loud
It should have a non-slip grip
    Easy to use
    Long battery life

    • Well said, Fredrick. I currently just trashed my IK Multimedia IPIRIGBTURN because it would either fail to respond to my foot or it would do a double page turn. It was cheap compared to the other models list above, but not worth the investment. Your list of 6 standards is spot on.

  9. Which is the best app to use for Android devices? I am considering:

    – Nextpage
    – Songbook and Songbook Pro
    – Music Notes
    – GuitarTapp ChordPro

It depends on the Bluetooth page turner. If you plan on buying one, check to see first that its compatible with Android. The PageFlip Butterfly page turner works with Nexpage and Songbook. I’m sure there are many other page turners that are compatible with Android.

  10. The PageFlip Firefly pedal turner is absolutely amazing. It is a paragon of good engineering. It does not turn two or more pages with a single foot press and turning pages is super easy. It does not slide much and it has an ergonomic design that makes it easy to operate.

I initially had the Airturn and in my opinion, the PageFlip is handsdown the best of the two.

  11. Is there a way to boost page turning?

    • The speed at which pages turn depends on the size of the PDF. If it is using large scans, then it is going to be slow. Consider closing apps you are not using so that you have enough RAM to help increase the speed of the page turns.

  12. I bought a Pageflip Butterfly Bluetooth Page Turner and have to say am very disappointed with it. Using it with an iPad to turn sheet music. It randomly turns more than one page at once, and sometimes doesn’t turn the page at all. For all practical purposes it is of no use to me in performance.

Now replaced with an Air Turn Duo which works perfectly.

    Hope this helps someone.
